What you don't want is a horde of survival supplies that is so large that you'll wind up throwing it all out past the expiration date, or worse, need it and it's gone bad. You have to develop a common sense system of storage to where you can rotate your goods. Naturally, if you don't care much for the survival supplies that you have laid in, it won't get rotated very often.

Witness the store brand of third rate greens, which is mostly stems, pieces, and dirt. You're not going to feed your family this mess. Don't buy it in the first place. Get good quality eats to put by. And speaking of loading up on food... It's often just as simple as getting a couple of extra cans of stuff you like on each trip to the grocery store. Before you know it you have your emergency grub.

Folks who like to camp in tents probably already have things around the house that they'll use in case the power goes off like lantern, cook stove, etc. However, even these people are going to be smack up against it if they fail to have spare lantern mantles and cooking gas. It's too late when it's too late. Better to get ready before you need to.

If you're a city boy or girl, you have some decisions to make. Would you prefer to eat your supper by candlelight or by the cheery light of a gas lantern? If you don't have the basics, there is no time like the present to make a list, check it twice, and start buying your equipment. Get it a piece at the time if you have to.

Country folks have a better time of disasters because they must prepare ahead when even an eighth of an inch of ice on the road will keep them homebound.

City folks have a different mindset, because if the worst comes, they can always hoof it to the store. The problem comes when the store isn't open, or worse, isn't going to open any time soon. Bare shelves equals empty bellies.

Getting ready for the worst is so easy, IF you have a plan, follow it, and get your survival supplies lined up and in place.

In 1506 a sweating sickness, fatal in three hours, prevailed with fearful mortality in London. The three most brilliant planets, Venus, Mars and Jupiter, were very near each other in 1507, but in 1506" they were widely separated. In 1511 they appeared near together again. But it was six years, till the mortal plague prevailed in England (or anywhere else that I find account of) viz.: 1517, when history says that in most of the capital towns of England half the inhabitants died, and Oxford was depopulated.

In 1524 a desolation plague prevailed extensively over Central Europe, in which the deaths were many times ten thousand. And here, perhaps, we find a corresponding junction of planets; for Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn "were very close to each other" November 11, of that year.

But whether the conjunction caused the plague or the plague the conjunction, (if either) we can hardly determine, as the conjunction occurred near the last of the year. In 1544, November 11, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn appeared in the same region of the sky, and in the Spring of that year a small battle took place at Cresulo, in which Imperially was defeated by the French.

The sweating plague made its fifth appearance in England in 1551, and in 1552 Venus, Mars and Jupiter were again in conjunction. Bat no one thinks the fatal sickness in Great
Britain caused the three bright planets to come near together; which is just as reasonable a hypothesis as that the conjunction caused the pestilence.

Again in 1561, and in 1565, these same heavenly bodies formed beautiful trios in the sky. But the plague appeared to have been deferred till 1603.

At Constantinople in 1611, 20,000 people died of pestilence; and in nine years another conjunction of the three bright planets occurred. In 1624 and in 1664 these three orbs of heaven again display their apparent love of each other's company. But it was not until 1625 that 35,000 persons died in London of "a great mortality."

The great plague of London commenced in 1664 I think in the month of December and carried away 70,000 lives iu 1665. The month of the conjunction in 1663 is not given, although admitting it to be: December, or with the beginning of the mortal sickness, I certainly believe that the great city filth and consequently bad air had vastly more to do with producing disease that had the beautiful trio of stars high up in the vault of heaven. But I suppose that the coincidence of the conjunction and this plague 1864-5 in London has given rise, in modern times, to the popular notion that pestilence and other calamities hinge on a conjunction. We will, however, trace the subject a little further.

In 1725, March 17, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter appeared in the same field of the telescope; but it was five years before this date that the plague destroyed 60,000 lives in and about Marseilles.

The great earthquake of Lisbon, when 50,000 lives were lost in eight minutes, took place in 1755, thirty years alter a conjunction. Another calamity occurred in 100, when "a most awful plague prevailed in Syria," but no conjunction is recorded till December, 1769, when Venus, Jupiter and Mars were very close to each other. In that year were three battles
were fought at Choezin and Galatz. But surely the vindictiveness of the Russians was a greater agent in their productions, than were the iunoceut stars of heaven.

In October 1801 October 2, Jupiter, Venus and the moon "were in close proximity, and Saturn was not far off." But pestilential diseases were two years before, and from one to three years after."

The former in Barbary and Fez, where several thousand people died every day for some time; and the latter in Spain, during which immense numbers were carried off.

In 1802, one year after the conjunction, yellow fever prevailed in Philadelphia.

In 1845, December 9, Venus and Saturn were nearly close enough to appear as one star to the naked eye. They were an interesting sight in the telescope. A plague is reported in Egypt in 1857 ; and in 1848-9 cholera visited Europe and America. On January 29, 1857, the moon, Jupiter and Venus appeared near together: but no sensible person supposes that caused five months of the Sepoy rebellion.

In conclusion, I would say that in the days when astrology was studied and the human mind was fettered, there was some excuse for superstitious fears. But to-day; when the study of stars is a science, which shows the "hand that made them is divine," there is no reason for vain superstition concerning the influence of the heavenly bodies.
