In your lifetime, in the
United States of America, there has been one disaster above
all others. When it occurred, society broke down into
those that would live and those that would die. It was a
survival information situation. Thousands of people, dependent
for generations on government for their daily sustenance
were wholly unprepared for what awaited them... Government did
not come.
You saw it live and in color on television...
Do not let it happen to you! DO NOT depend on the
government or the magic fairy. You be the survivor. You be
the one prepared for survival! Depend on YOURSELF!
Survival Books
Survival books contain elements of what I have been
teaching my students about survival since the early
1980's in my hunting safety education classes.
I live in a suburban environment with plenty
of stores within walking distance for chips and cola,
with tracts of woods close enough to get lost in fairly
easily if you are dumb enough or unlucky enough. A very
simple read of even a poorly done survival book would
teach me how to find myself.
The theory on survival books goes that even a
poorly written one will teach you some good things and
probably won't get you killed, at least in a typical
survival situation.
Your choice of survival books needs to reflect
the survival situation you are most likely to find
yourself in. There is urban survival for city dwellers
and there are those backwoods survival books for folks
who venture further afield. Even so, knowledge of both
survival scenarios is a good thing to know since you
can't predict where you will be when the time comes to
put your study to use.
A good survival manual should teach you not only
the rudiments of staying alive, but also give you the
attitude to stay alive. The best survival books ever
written can't save you from being smacked by a train if
you won't get your butt off the tracks.
You will find as good of a list of survival books
as are in print on this page. So which ones should you
get? So, do you know how to make a fire? That's always a
favorite. It's more complicated than throwing two sticks
together and dousing it with a gallon of gas.
If you are well fixed, get a selection. If you
are concerned for your future but shy of funds, then
pick one to get the scope of surviving disaster and then
branch out from there as interest, time, and money
permit.

Go to the meat of the matter.

mission. In a survival situation
FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION
Again, if
you mostly live in town, the challenges you face to
survive are different from those of a country living
person. Basic to both survival modes though are heat,
shelter, food, and water. Food in hard times is hard to
come by no matter where you live.
Whereas the country fellow will need to have a
knowledge of how to live off the land, the city person
needs to know how to procure a meal from the dwindling
food supply. And should the situation necessitate, the
city person needs to know how to find food in the
forest, and the country survivalist needs to be trained
in how to survive a foray into the city. In a pinch,
long time city folks may even be tougher than their
country cousins. The weak on either side of the asphalt
won't be a factor after a time anyway.
Long time goals are things like improving the
situation and growing food. A city man thinks corn comes
from the grocery store. Thinking like that makes for a
hungry belly. Most likely, those who survive will shed
their urban clothes for country ones, tennis shoes for
boots.
Of course, if you are just concerned with a short
fix, as in a hunting trip into the jungles, there are
plenty of books that will tell you everything from what
not to drink to which end of the gun to hold onto
tightly.
In many states, you can get free survival
information by simply signing up for a free hunting
safety training course with your state conservation
department. Bet you didn't know that. You get superb, if
brief training, and a dandy survival manual in the
process. It tells you what to do with the buck after you
put it down on the ground. A town type might be
surprised to know that food must be processed before it
can be eaten, in that wild game rarely comes
pre-packaged.
If I were serious about being a survivor, I would
study the books available and make a list. Actually, I
would make two lists, one being on urban survival, and
the other for the rest. Then I would choose from the
list the best books for my purposes.
If you were fortunate enough to serve in the
armed forces, then you are probably aware, for example,
of the army survival manual. You may even have one. If
not, they are for sale. Army survival techniques are
very thorough and popular.
Otherwise, look at what is available and choose
wisely. Your life depends on it. Better still, if you
have children, you have a special reason to learn how to
get by during hard times. Survival books can spell
success for you when all else fails. Don't re-invent the
wheel. Go with those who know. Purchase, read, and keep
survival books!
It
is a fact that something as simple as a
bottle of water may one day save your life.
Don't let
the inconvenience of becoming
prepared deprive you of all that you ever
were or ever hope to be.
At the end,
don't think, "I should have paid more
attention to breathing." Don't let it be
you. Don't feed Darwin. Old whisker face is
fat enough. Be the survivor.
